The role of protein, fat and fibre in your dog's diet
- Animal-based protein provides all essential amino acids in the correct proportions, ensuring better digestibility than plant-based sources.
- Targeted fatty acids from fish oils and chicken fat promote a shiny coat, healthy skin, and strong cell membranes.
- Moderately fermentable fibre (beet pulp) supports intestinal health by providing energy for digestive cells.
- Balanced digestion: Our patented fiber source ensures healthy stool volume and avoids issues like excess gas.
The importance of high-quality protein
When it comes to feeding your dog, not all protein sources are the same. Single plant proteins such as soybean meal do not contain all the amino acids in all the right proportions that a dog needs. IAMS’ Dog Foods contain animal-based proteins that provide for all necessary essential amino acid requirements. Plus, special refining and quality assurance tests ensure that we use only high-quality, highly digestible protein sources for increased digestibility.
Unique fatty acids in IAMS foods
Fatty acids are a key part of complete dog nutrition. The fatty acids found in vitamin-rich fish oils can help promote healthy skin, a shiny coat and overall health. Other essential fatty acids, found in chicken fat and maize, are important for maintaining skin and coat health and proper membrane structure. All IAMS products contain sources of these fatty acids.
Moderately fermentable fibre
Our research has shown that moderately fermentable fibre, such as beet pulp, enhances intestinal health. The fermentable part of the fibre is broken down by intestinal bacteria to provide short-chain fatty acids, an energy source for intestinal cells. The non-fermentable component provides bulk for normal faeces.
Using only highly fermentable fibres can cause problems, such as excess wind, while using only non-fermentable fibres, such as peanut hulls, promotes excess stool volume because they are of no nutritional value.
All IAMS products contain a patented source of moderately fermentable fibre to help keep a dog’s digestive system healthy.
